As you may already know, gum disease is a severely dangerous dental problem that has destroyed the smiles of many. It forms when the plaque on the smile is left untreated, which is why it is very important to care for your teeth and gums each and every day. Now, gum disease is already a problem for regular smiles, but if you are aligning your teeth with braces, your smile is even more susceptible to the disease. So, to maintain the health of your smile, please do the following things:

Brush your teeth
Make sure you brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes each time. If you can, brush after each meal so the food particles and plaque don’t remain on your teeth for a long period of time. As you brush, be gentle along the gum line but make sure to brush as thoroughly as possible.

Floss your smile
You should floss your smile at least once a day, if not more. You can use whichever product is best for you and your teeth, but it’s important that you are careful not to harm your gums as you clean the crevices of your smile. If you need help flossing with braces, we have some tips that can help you.

Rinse your mouth
Mouthwash is a tool that many forget about, but we ask that you don’t. It’s best that you rinse your mouth with fluoride or anti-bacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Doing so will further prevent gum disease and it will also nourish and strengthen your teeth.

Visit your dentist
Visiting your dentist for a dental cleaning every six months is the best thing you can do for your smile. These appointments offer the only treatment that can completely remove the plaque from your teeth, which is why they are so important. During these visits, your dental team will scrape the surfaces of your teeth and will eliminate every trace of plaque from your smile.
